What is BNB?
BNB is the native cryptocurrency of the Binance ecosystem. Initially created to offer trading fee discounts, BNB has evolved into a utility token powering smart contracts, DeFi, NFTs, and more through the BNB Chain—a scalable, low-fee blockchain.

BNB Founders and History
Binance Coin (BNB) was launched in 2017 through an ICO, where 100 million tokens were sold at $0.15, raising $15 million. Binance was founded by Changpeng Zhao and Yi He, and it quickly became the largest crypto exchange by trading volume.
2019: Binance Chain launched
2020: Binance Smart Chain (BSC) introduced
2022: Binance Chain and BSC merged into BNB Chain
Understanding the BNB Ecosystem
The BNB Chain is central to Binance's operations and supports decentralized applications (dApps), smart contracts, and Web3 development. It uses a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus model for fast, low-cost transactions.
BNB Chain components include:
BNB Beacon Chain – Governance and staking
BNB Greenfield – Decentralized storage
opBNB – Layer 2 scaling (optimistic rollups)
zkBNB – zkRollup infrastructure (currently in testnet)
BNB Tokenomics: Scarcity and Utility
BNB was pre-mined with a total supply of 200 million. The circulating supply reduces over time due to Binance’s quarterly Auto-Burn mechanism, aiming to burn 50% of the total supply.
Use Cases Include:
Trading fee discounts on Binance
Gas fees for BNB Chain transactions
Participation in Launchpad token sales
Staking and governance
Collateral for loans and yield farming
BNB Vault for passive income
Advantages and Disadvantages of BNB
✅ Advantages:
Versatile use across DeFi, trading, NFTs, and more
Strong backing from Binance and its global reach
Deflationary model via token burns
Broad integration with Web3 tools and apps
Fast, scalable blockchain infrastructure
❌ Disadvantages:
Heavy reliance on Binance as a centralized entity
Regulatory risks linked to Binance’s global operations
Competition from other blockchain ecosystems
Limited use outside the Binance ecosystem
